Wigan academy forward Rhys Pugsley has been handed a two-year suspension for breaching anti-doping regulations.

Pugsley, 19, tested positive for metabolites of methandienone, an anabolic steroid, in a sample provided at an out-of-competition test on April 22.

He has been with the Warriors since 2011, joining from Welsh amateur club Newport Titans.

Kris Radlinski, Wigan Rugby General Manager, said: “Rhys has been honest and contrite throughout the process and has extended apologies to Wigan coaching staff, players and sponsors for his actions in letting down both himself and the Wigan club.

“The club will support him, as allowed, through this difficult time and is in the process of constructing a rehabilitation programme to take effect after the recommended period of remorse, reflection and full awareness.”

The back-rower or prop has represented Wales at international level, making his debut against France on his 18th birthday in 2012.

His ban applies from May 15, 2014.
