Widnes youngster Keanan Brand will undergo surgery on Wednesday after suffering a double leg break in his debut.

The 19-year-old centre broke both his tibia and fibula just six minutes into Widnes’ 31-12 defeat to bottom four rivals Hull Kingston Rovers at KCOM Craven Park on Saturday afternoon.

Brand has been a standout in the Vikings’ Under-19s side for a couple of years now and Widnes coach Denis Betts is sad to see the rising star suffer a long-term injury.

He said: “He will have an operation tomorrow (Wednesday).

“It’s not as bad as we initially thought, but it is quite a bad break, so he will have an operation to have a plate in his leg.

“Both his tibia and fibula snapped and it had a lot of weight go through an awkward position.

“I feel for the kid, he was six minutes into his debut and it was just a freak accident, poor kid.”

Brand has been at Widnes since he was 14 and is an England Academy international.
