Widnes give Carberry another year

Widnes hooker Liam Carberry has signed a new 12-month deal at the Select Security Stadium.

Carberry, 21, is yet to make a competitive appearance for the Vikings since joining in the close season from Wigan, having suffered a broken leg and ankle ligament damage in pre-season.

Coach Denis Betts said: “Liam has been unlucky with injury this year but we believe it’s in our own interests to develop the potential we have seen in him.

“He’s a young kid who has worked hard since he’s been here and we feel he deserves another opportunity with us. We are looking forward to seeing him in a Widnes shirt in the not so distant future.”

Carberry is the latest in a number of new deals handed out by Betts in recent weeks, following on from Paul Johnson and Stefan Marsh.

Carberry said: “I’m over the moon to be re-signing at the Vikings. It’s a special Club and to be involved for another year is great for me. I joined the Club last year and worked hard to get myself right after an injury set back, so to get injured again on the eve of Super League was a big blow for me.

“However, I’ve worked hard since then and I’m only a couple of weeks away from playing again and I’m keen to repay the faith Denis and the coaching staff at Widnes have shown in me. I can’t wait to get out there and pull on the Vikings shirt and show the supporters what I can do.”
