Whitehaven sign Cain Southernwood

Whitehaven have signed Bradford half-back Cain Southernwood for the 2013 season.

Southernwood, 20, came through the Wakefield academy before switching to Bradford on a three-year deal mid-way through the 2010 season.

He said: “I’m looking forward to it, there’s a lot of good players signed here. It seems like we’ve got a good squad together and I’m looking forward to a big season.”

A product of Castleford amateur club Smawthorne ARLFC, Southernwood made his Super League debut as Matt Orford‘s understudy against Warrington in June 2010, but made just one further first appearance for the Bulls.

He spent 2012 on loan with Championship side Dewsbury, where he made five appearances, and is set to partner former Wakefield half-back Jamie Rooney for Whitehaven in 2013.

Southernwood added: “I’m really looking forward to working with him, he’s got loads of experience and he’s played in Super League for many years. Hopefully we can get a good partnership going and tear some players apart.”
