West Hull win NCL Grand Final

Correspondent

A tremendous defensive effort saw West Hull complete the treble with a 20-8 victory over Wath Brow Hornets in the National Conference League Grand Final.

It was far from the perfect start however as an error in the first set of the match allowed the Hornets to pounce and open the scoring. Luke Davison latched onto a perfect kick to the corner but Fran King couldn’t convert.

West Hull hit back with an almost copycat try just five minutes later, Ian Kerman’s perfectly weighted kick setting up James Garmston. Josh Hart goaled to give his side a 6-4 lead.

Tom Radley, who had created great field position with an excellent kick return, stepped off his right foot to split the defence score a sensational try. Another Hart conversion followed and gave West Hull an eight point advantage.

The green and golds scored their third before half-time after a Scott Partis’ kick led to a Dan Parker try. Hart couldn’t convert but Mark Hewitt’s side led 16-4 at the interval.

The second-half saw a sustained period of Wath Brow pressure but keen to retain their title, West Hull rose to the challenge with some exceptional defending.

Backed by their passionate fans, the Cumbrian side’s pressure eventually told, Peter Caddy scoring in the corner to make it 8-16.

But that was as good as it got and after a Partis 40-20, West Hull went further ahead, a great move culminating in a try for Josh Hart.
