Wellens out of Super League opener

St Helens captain Paul Wellens will miss their Super League opener against London Broncos after failing to recover from an Achilles injury.

Wellens, 31, has missed much of pre-season and is still under treatment for the injury, but is hopeful of returning early in the season.

Before the 19-man squads were revealed without the full back’s presence, he said: “It is getting better and I am targeting this weekend’s game, but if I don’t make it I will be looking at the week after. I won’t play unless I am 100 per cent fit but I’m confident I will be ready for the early rounds.

“I am chomping at the bit to get back but have to listen to the medical staff. If it means missing a couple of games to play the rest of the season that’s ok.”

New signings Lance Hohaia, Anthony Laffranchi and Mark Flanagan are all in the squad for the trip to the capital.
