Wayne Bennett wants George Burgess to stay in the NRL

South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett has admitted he wants departing prop George Burgess to remain in the NRL in 2020.

The England international’s contract with the Rabbitohs expires at the end of the year and he will not be offered a new deal.

Burgess – who is currently serving a nine-match ban for an eye gouge on Robbie Farah – is considering offers from Super League and the NRL, having turned down a move to Parramatta earlier this year.

Bennett told NRL.com: “George won’t be here next year, that was determined a long time ago before anything else happened.

“I do [hope he stays in the NRL], he has got a lot to offer.

“We have got salary cap restrictions and that’s the point where we are at. We just can’t go to that figure, but I do want him to stay in the NRL.

“He is a wonderful player and a good bloke to have around the place.”
