New Zealand Warriors have won in the race to sign hooker Shaun Berrigan, landing the Australia international on a one-year deal.

Berrigan, 32, gained a release from the final year of his contract with Hull to join the Warriors and has an option to sign for a further year in 2012.

He sought the release in order to be closer to home, following the death of his father Barry early last year.

He said he was grateful to Hull FC for granting him an early release.

“I have loved my time at Hull FC and leave with many happy memories and friendships,” said Berrigan.

“I want to move closer to my Mum and family and I’m looking forward to spending more time with them.

“I’m also excited about moving to Auckland to join the Vodafone Warriors and having another opportunity to play in the NRL.”

A member of Brisbane’s NRL premiership-wining squads of 2000 and 2006, Berrigan has also played 14 tests for Australia and made 15 appearances for Queensland.

He will join former Broncos team mates Joel Moon and Brett Seymour at the Warriors.

Coach Ivan Cleary said Berrigan’s signing rounded out the Vodafone Warriors’ squad for their 2011 campaign.

“Shaun’s ability to play so many positions and the depth of his experience make him a great addition to our squad,” he said.
