Warrington have congratulated local rivals Widnes following the news that the Vikings will be joining Super League next season.

The Wolves confirmed the Vikings’ relegation from the top flight with an emphatic win at the Halton Stadium back in 2005, while Widnes were the first away team to win at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Warrington chief executive Andy Gatcliffe said: “On behalf of the board of directors here at Warrington Wolves, all coaching, playing, administration staff and all the ever-loyal fans of the club, we are absolutely delighted for Widnes Vikings in attaining Super League status.

“Having been aware of the effort and detail that has gone into making this successful bid they can only be congratulated. We all look forward to reinstating the local derbies, Wolves v Vikings, and what we all know will be sell-out games.”

Warrington Wolves submitted their application to Red Hall yesterday. The successful Super League clubs will be announced on 26th July.
