Warrington 22-30 Hull KR: Injury-hit Rovers complete impressive comeback

Hull KR claimed a 30-22 victory over play-off chasing rivals Warrington at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Danny McGuire’s side were 22-12 down with 15 minutes to go, with tries from Ethan Ryan, Matt Parcell and Sam Royle completing the comeback.

However, the win came with a price, with Mikey Lewis, George King, Jimmy Keinhorst and Greg Richards sustaining injuries. 

Match report

Josh Thewlis was named at full-back for the hosts, with Greg Minikin starting on the wing. Jason Clark started at loose forward, with Kyle Amor returning from injury on the bench.  

For the visitors, Ben Crooks replaced the injured Shaun Kenny-Dowall in the centres. Sam Royle and Jez Litten both started, with Will Tate on the bench.

Stefan Ratchford opened the scoring with the right boot on eight minutes. He converted a penalty for offside. 

Jake Wardle scored the first try in the wet conditions on 14 minutes. The loanee centre supported a break from Daryl Clark to race away and score under the posts. 

Wardle crossed for his second just four minutes later. The England international jumping highest to collect a kick from George Williams to score in the corner. 

Hull KR replied with their first on 25 minutes. Ryan Hall made a break on the left wing, kicking back inside for Crooks to chase down and ground the ball for a try. 

Peter Mata’utia was sent for 10 following a challenge on Robins full-back Coote.

The Rovers instantly used their man advantage with Sam Wood crossing in the following set. 

Ratchford added another penalty goal on 32 minutes for a four point lead at the break.

HT: Warrington 16-12 Hull KR

Elliot Minchella became the second man of the game to be sent to the sin bin. The forward was deemed to have held back Danny Walker in a try-scoring opportunity on 55 minutes.

Just like Hull KR did, the hosts crashed over instantly. Powerhouse Thomas Mikaele scoring his first for the Wolves to extend the lead to 22-12. 

Matt Parcell then started the beginning of the comeback on 65 minutes. The hooker received an off-load from Korbin Sims to dive over under the sticks in front of the travelling fans. Mikey Lewis received heavy strapping on his right foot and tried his best to remain on the field, but he soon left the field. 

Ethan Ryan completed the comeback on 70 minutes. The Ireland international collected a kick to the corner from Jez Litten to score. 

Sam Royle made sure of the two points with just two minutes left on the clock. Warrington couldn’t collect a high kick and the St Helens loanee went over, with Coote keeping his 100% record from the boot.
