Wane would love Lions role

Wigan head coach Shaun Wane has put himself in contention to lead the possible British and Irish Lions team in 2015.

Wane, 49, has no plans on leaving the current Super League champions just yet though, and has verbally agreed a new contract with owner Ian Lenagan.

On the eve of what will be his third season as head coach, the former prop also revealed NRL aspirations.

“I want to stay here for the next few years,” said Wane.

“But I want to better myself, and if I can do that elsewhere, then it’s exciting.

“Going to the NRL, it’s something I want to do.”

If a Lions team was put together for a tour Down-Under next year, then patriotic Wane would be very interested.

He said, “I love my country and, if ever I got the chance, it would be fantastic.

“I know I could offer something to the job if it ever became available.”
