Wane: We weren’t smart enough

Wigan head coach Shaun Wane says his team wasn’t consistent or smart enough with the ball to beat Hull FC in the Challenge Cup semi-final.

Wigan went down 12-16 at Doncaster, after taking an early 8-2 lead.

Wane said he was “very, very proud” of his team.

“I thought the best team won, but they knew they’ve been in a game,” he said.

“Well played to Hull. We were just a bit dumb in key areas with the ball.

“We just weren’t consistent enough. There was certain times when we had them but we kicked the ball early….Just not smart enough for the ball.

“We did so much defending we were gassed. We’ve no complaints [about the defeat].

Wane said his players are hurting after being knocked out of the Cup, and will use the loss for motivation for the rest of the season.

“I’ve never see them as hurt as they are now. But they knew exactly what I was going to say.

“We’ll use that as a real strength to come back [in the Super 8s].”
