Wane slams Tomkins for referee rant

Wigan coach Shaun Wane has criticised Sam Tomkins following his sin-binning in their 48-18 rout over London Broncos.

The England star, who made a winning return to the side following a shoulder injury, was sent off for ten minutes for disputing a call made by referee Robert Hicks and his assistants.

The incident took place with the in-goal touch judge when he ruled a drop out in favour of the away side. With Tomkins off the pitch London rallied and scored two tries of their own through Liam Colbon and Kieran Dixon to silence the DW Stadium crowd.

Wane said, “That was the wrong call from the touch judge, but that is no excuse and it won’t happen again. It was the wrong call but that happens in games, the referees make mistakes just like players.

“They are incidents for me to sort out in the week and not for Sam to do it on the field. He is a competitor, I understand he wants to win but he just cannot do that. I don’t know what he said to the referee but it must have been severe for him to sin-bin him.”
