Wane backs Tomkins to break club record

Wigan coach Shaun Wane has backed Sam Tomkins to break a club record for tries scored in consecutive games when the Warriors face Wakefield on Sunday.

Tomkins, 24, has scored in his last eleven matches and equalled a record currently joint held by Steve Ella and Martin Offiah.

And Wane believes the England international will go down in the Wigan history books this weekend.

He said: “I wasn’t actaully aware of that but I bet Sam is.

“His form has been fantastic, he has been outstanding and although he wasn’t at his best last weekend against Leeds he showed real commitment and desire to win the game. In the last set we had he took three carries and it showed how much that meant to him.

“Zip was a different type of player to Sam, it is a great record that to score in 11 games in a row, I didn’t score 11 tries in my career.

“There are still things in his game he needs to improve on, on how he attacks. There are certain technical areas where he can get better but what I love about him is he is a winner and he competes for everything, that is more important to me, he is mentally tough.”
