Wakefield Trinity star Max Jowitt closes in on transfer to Super League rival

Max Jowitt’s time at Wakefield Trinity looks to be drawing to a close – with the fullback holding talks over a possible move to York Knights in 2027, Love Rugby League can reveal.

Jowitt has been a mainstay of Trinity for well over a decade since his making his debut 2014, and he was awarded a testimonial for the 2027 season due to his services to the club in both Super League and the Championship.

However, it is now entirely possible that Jowitt spends that testimonial year at another Super League club – with an exit from Trinity on the cards.

Jowitt heading for Wakefield exit

Love Rugby League revealed earlier this year how the club had effectively told the fullback he was free to explore options elsewhere for 2027 and beyond.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is almost certainly going to become their first-choice fullback next year when he arrives from New Zealand Warriors on a bumper marquee deal.

Furthermore, the club have been impressed with both the development and performances of Josh Rourke this year – so much so that he has usurped Jowitt as first-choice in recent weeks, with Jowitt either having to play in the halves or miss out on team selection altogether.

And that situation has evolved further in recent weeks, with a number of clubs expressing an interest in the player – but it is York who are emerging as favourites.

They have made an offer to sign him on a contract which will begin at the start of next year – and which would see him reunite with a coach he knows very well in Mark Applegarth.

Applegarth was the head of youth at Wakefield during Jowitt’s formative years, and he played regularly for Applegarth during his sole season in charge at Wakefield in 2023.

But with Trinity seemingly evolving their squad plans, Jowitt could now start afresh in North Yorkshire.

York’s squad plans evolve further

Should a deal be struck, Jowitt would become the latest big name to join York – who are effectively on catch-up and working behind other Super League teams after well-publicised financial problems.

However, a takeover of the club led by local businessman David Dickson has now been completed and that will enable the Knights to be in a position to spend more aggressively.

They had already pulled off an eye-catching deal to sign Cronulla Sharks forward Cameron McInnes, while Matty English has agreed a permanent deal ahead of his initial loan from Huddersfield Giants.

Jowitt’s arrival would see him become first-choice at fullback, with Toa Mata’afa likely to switch into the centres to accommodate the Wakefield Trinity star.

And more deals are expected to be completed at York in the coming weeks as they build a squad they hope will compete in their second season in the top flight – providing they are given the green light through the IMG gradings at the end of the season.
