Wakefield Trinity have appointed Matty Ashurst as their new captain for the 2023 season, replacing Jacob Miller.

The club confirmed the news on Friday afternoon.

Ashurst, 33, joined Wakefield ahead of the 2015 season from Salford, having started his career at St Helens. He has made more than 170 appearances for the club, with a total of 277 Super League career appearances.

He takes on the vacant role left by Miller, who has joined Castleford for the 2023 season on a three-year deal.

25-year-old Jordan Crowther has been appointed the club’s vice-captain.

Wakefield Trinity 2023 ins & outs

Wakefield have lost several key players following the conclusion of the 2022 campaign and will be looking to add more to their squad during the off-season.

Willie Poching was relieved of his duties earlier in September, replaced by Mark Applegarth for the 2023 campaign.

Winger Tom Johnstone has left the club to join Catalans on a two-year deal. David Fifita and Tinirau Arona were also released by Wakefield.

Yusuf Aydin, James Batchelor, Sadiq Adebiyi, Brad Walker and Thomas Minns have also left the club.

Applegarth has added experienced back-rower and New Zealand international Kevin Proctor to his squad, having been sacked by the Gold Coast Titans last season. Meanwhile, half-back Morgan Smith makes the step up from Featherstone for 2023 on a two-year contract.
