Wakefield are retaining their long-serving Australian utility ace Jason Demetriou as the club and first-team captain for the 2010 season.

Wildcats’ Head Coach John Kear confirmed his appointment at the club’s annual media day which was staged at the National Coal Mining Museum near Wakefield.

Jason, or JD as he is known to the Trinity fans, has been captain at the Hearwell Stadium for the last four years and Kear said: “Jason is a natural leader and he leads by example.

“Jason is a very committed professional player and his leadership skills will be needed this year because we have a squad that contains far more young players than we have fielded in previous years.

“I have every confidence that we have the right man for the job. JD is a player who thrives on this kind of responsibility and he never allows it to affect the quality of his own performance.”

Jason said: “Being captain is a job I relish and I’m looking forward to the challenge again in 2010.

“It’s an honour to be given such a job and I’m enjoying working with the latest group of Wildcat players.

“I’ve had the job a couple of times since 2005 but this will be my fourth season as first team captain”.
