Wakefield grant off-contract ace Thomas Doyle immediate release as hooker enters open market

Wakefield Trinity have granted off-contract ace Thomas Doyle a release from Belle Vue, meaning he now enters the open market with immediate effect.

Doyle, 27, had been with Trinity since the start of the 2024 campaign having joined them from Keighley Cougars.

A product of fellow Super League outfit Bradford’s youth system, the hooker had played 57 games for the Bulls as well as 23 for Keighley prior to signing at Wakefield.

But having last played a first-team game for Daryl Powell’s side in July 2025, through a combination of non-selection and injury, Trinity had no plans to extend his stay beyond the end of the season.

And an agreement has now been reached for Doyle to be released from his contract a few months early, potentially allowing him to sign elsewhere for the remainder of the season and beyond.

Leeds-born Doyle had featured for Bradford in the Bulls’ last two games as a loanee: lining up against both Hull KR and Warrington Wolves.

Bradford head coach Kurt Haggerty played down any interest in signing Doyle on a permanent basis not long after the hooker had returned to Odsal on loan at the back end of last month.

But now, he would be free to do so on an immediate basis – with clubs having until August 21 to make permanent additions to their squad for what remains of the 2026 campaign.

Doyle, of course, may not be on his way back to Bradford and could sign elsewhere.

He now has 116 career appearances on his CV, with 24 tries scored in the process.

16 of those tries to date have come in a Bulls shirt, with three scored for Keighley and five for Wakefield: including one at Wembley back in 2024 as Trinity beat Sheffield Eagles in the 1895 Cup final.

That season, Doyle played an integral part for Powell’s side as they won the treble in the second tier: scooping both the 1895 Cup and Championship League Leaders’ Shield before beating Toulouse Olympique in the Grand Final at Belle Vue.

Not long after that Grand Final triumph, Trinity’s return to Super League was confirmed via the IMG gradings.

A couple of years on, they are now vying for a top two finish in the top-flight having made it into the play-offs at the first attempt last season, being beaten on the road at Leigh Leopards at the eliminator stage.
