Wakefield fans smash stadium petition target

Stadium Wakefield Action Group (SWAG) have announced that their initial target of 10,000 signatures in support of the club’s new ground at Newmarket, Stanley, has been smashed as the Wildcats build-up towards submitting planning permission.

SWAG previously announced that they had reached over 5,000 signatures but over 30 volunteers have helped the petition reach 13,000 signatures after holding an event in Wakefield’s main shopping precinct on Saturday.

Spokesman Phil Townsend said: “The response to our request for support for the proposed new Community Stadium and Sports facilities at Newmarket has blown me away.

“Ten thousand signatures seemed like a daunting task when we started around 5 weeks ago, but now we have revised our target towards 15,000 – or even more – all as a result of the fantastic support and efforts shown by the public of Wakefield.

“This must surely send the message to Wakefield MDC that this is what the population of Wakefield needs and we urge them to be supportive when the plans are submitted – hopefully sometime in November.”

The petition will continue running until the 31st October to allow for any last minute forms to be returned and also to ensure all data is collated before submission to the Council.
