Warrington have opened the 2016 Super League season with an entertaining two-point victory over the defending champions Leeds at Headingley.

It was a tough first half with Leeds having all the possession but the Wolves defending bravely.

Joe Westerman and Brett Delaney had a head clash, with Westerman needing treatment.

Danny McGuire was forced off with an injury in the first half and did not return. Liam Sutcliffe also appeared hobbled at stages.

Warrington took a slender 6-0 lead into half-time thanks to a Chris Sandow try.

But just six minutes into the second half and Brad Singleton hit back for Leeds when he barged over through several defenders.

The Rhinos then took a 10-6 lead thanks to a brilliant try set up by Joel Moon.

Warrington soon responded when a perfect kick from Sandow was recovered by Ben Currie, who found Kevin Penny to score.

Kurt Gidley‘s conversion gave the visitors a slender 12-10 lead with 11 minutes left.

Rob Burrow almost darted over in the closing stages but the Wolves managed to hold him and waves of Leeds’ attacks out. Ben Currie in particular was immense in defence.

Zak Hardaker had a late penalty attempt to tie it up but his kick sailed wide and Warrington were home.
