Sam Burgess has suffered a serious neck injury and been stretchered from the field during South Sydney‘s defeat to St George Illawarra.

Burgess was taken from the field in the minicab after going down in the 51st minute.

The Englishman ducked his head as he ran the ball at the line against three defenders.

Souths coach Michael Maguire said: “The doc is pretty positive and Sam is in a pretty good head space from what I was told.”

“He had some tingling down one arm (but) he had movement (in all his limbs) they are the first signs you look for when you have an incident like that.

“He was in a bit of pain, he sort of got compressed there quite heavily.”

Burgess is believed to have told medical staff that he had a stinging pain between his shoulders. The forward has been taken to hospital for scans and treatment.
