Veivers: Cumbrian derby is relegation decider

Workington Town coach Phil Veivers believes whoever wins the Cumbrian derby tomorrow could potentially avoid relegation.

Both Town and Whitehaven are battling to avoid the drop to League 1. The two Cumbrian sides clash on Sunday afternoon.

“They’ll all important for us at this moment in time, we’re trying to get out of this relegation zone and they don’t come much bigger than this one at the weekend,” he said.

Whitehaven decided to relieve coach James Coyle of his duties earlier this week and Veivers admitted it could galvanise them.

Four senior Haven players have taken charge of the team.

“They could capitulate and roll over or turn round and say ‘we need to win this one for ourselves and the club’,” Veivers said.

“You don’t need any motivation for this game. It’s the easiest game of the year for me in terms of motivation when you’ve got a fully fit squad but we’re doing it tough at the moment.”
