League 1 side Hunslet have bolstered their forward pack with the signing of Mikey Wood on a 12-month deal.

Wood, 25, arrives from Championship side Newcastle Thunder and will be in contention to make his debut during Saturday’s trip to London Skolars.

He has previously racked up over a half-century of appearances for Bradford, first on loan and then permanently.

Hunslet head coach Gary Thornton has expressed his delight at the acquisition of Wood, who had others deals on the table following his Newcastle release.

He said: “This is a fantastic signing for us. Mikey is still a young man but already has lots of experience with Huddersfield Giants, Bradford Bulls, and Newcastle Thunder at Championship level, and I’m delighted we have been able to add a player of his quality to our squad.

“He’s a big athletic middle unit player who can play long minutes.

“He carries strong and will get us on the front foot, and defends tough in that key area of the field.”
