Toulouse Olympique winger Latrell Schaumkel has called time on his career effective immediately, aged just 28.

The winger made his debut with Toulouse in 2021 against York, and was a part of the promotion-winning side that defeated Featherstone that season for a place in Super League, scoring a try in the final with a 34-12 win over Featherstone.

A former French Elite outside-back with Villeneuve, Schaumkel has been forced to retire due to injury, according to Toulouse.

He has only featured in two games in 2023, and hands up the boots with 23 appearances and 11 tries for the side.

Having also featured in the NSW Reserve Grade, he represented Niue four times on the international stage. He played against Malta (twice), Philippines and Greece.

Latrell Schaumkel calls time on career

Schaumkel said: “I thank the staff and the club for giving me the opportunity to spend three unforgettable years at Toulouse.

“Both on and off the field I spent moments that will remain with me.

“All the friendships I made here, I will never forget them.

“The club, the fans and this city will hold a special place in my heart forever.”

Toulouse president Bernard Sarrazain added: “I am obviously sad to see Latrell leave because he is a very efficient player but he is an extraordinary person before all.

“As soon as he arrived, we felt that he was a devoted man, who enjoyed himself on and off the pitch.

“I want to underline the courage to make this decision, at 28-years-old, it is unfortunate for him.

“But I also wanted to say thank you for everything he brought to the club, we lived unforgettable moments and tell him that he will always be at home at Toulouse Olympique.”

The club commented: “Everyone at Toulouse Olympique thanks Latrell for his three years of contribution and good memories.

“We wish him the best for the future.”

Toulouse had only confirmed a 19-man squad ahead of the 2023 Championship campaign, but have added loan signings since.

Greg Richards joined the club from Hull KR, while Wigan youngster Harvie Hill recently represented the side before being recalled by his parent club.

Toulouse will be without full-back Olly Ashall-Bott for the rest of the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Widnes.

The side are also currently without forward Lambert Belmas due to a seven-match suspension, although the club are appealing the decision.
