Toronto sign Warrington winger Matty Russell

Toronto have signed Scotland star Matty Russell from Warrington with immediate effect on a contract until the end of the 2020 season.

The 24-year-old joined the Wolves in 2014 from NRL side Gold Coast Titans. He made 97 appearances for the club, scoring 31 tries.

Russell was out of favour in Steve Price’s Warrington and now makes an immediate move to Toronto.

But the winger or full-back is made up to join the Wolfpack.

He said: “I’m looking forward to first of all playing with the Wolfpack.

“I believe my best rugby is in front of me and I hope to contribute to the team week in, week out, and we have a strong possibility of making the middle 8s.

“I’m really looking forward to playing in Toronto. I kept an eye on the club last year and to see how well it was going was great to see for rugby league. For my family to watch me play in Toronto will be an unreal experience.”

And Toronto head coach Paul Rowley is delighted to have secured the services of Russell.

He said: “We are happy to welcome Matty to the Wolfpack.

“He is going to add more quality and competition to the backline and is comfortable on the wing and fullback. I’m really looking forward to seeing Matty pull on the Wolfpack jersey.”
