Toovey sacked by Manly

NRL club Manly have sacked head coach Geoff Toovey, with a year of his contract still to run.

The coach will remain in charge until the end of the current campaign. Trent Barrett will take over as coach next season.

Rumour and speculation have surrounded Toovey’s position at the club for some time, and he was not quoted in any of Manly’s official media releases.

“Geoff has been an influential figure within the Sea Eagles organisation for almost three decades,” said Sea Eagles chief executive Joe Kelly.

“His contribution on and off the field is unprecedented, and he will always be one of the club’s favourite sons.

“Geoff and the club remain firmly committed to finishing this season off on the highest possible note.”
