Tomkins could switch to half back

Wigan coach Shaun Wane may be forced to move Sam Tomkins to half-back for Sunday’s Magic Weekend clash with Leeds.

Wane handed a debut to 18-year-old scrum half George Williams in last Saturday’s 64-6 win over London, but he won’t feature against the Rhinos.

First choice number seven Matty Smith remains a doubt with a shoulder injury, meaning Tomkins could make the switch from full-back, despite scoring a remarkable 24 tries in his last 10 games.

Wane said: “I probably won’t risk George in this game. It’s going to be a really intense, tough arm wrestle.

“There’s a chance Matty Smith might be back or I’ve got the option of Sam going there and Paddy (Pat Richards) moving to full-back and swapping my outside backs around.”

The Warriors have won their last 10 games, and face a Leeds side smarting from back-to-back defeats.

It will only be the second time in seven Magic Weekends that Wigan haven’t faced derby rivals St Helens, who instead take on Warrington.
