Tomkins backs hometown club

Milton Keynes’ very own Rugby League side has made an impressive first signing in the shape of arguably the sport’s most talented player – Sam Tomkins.

Tomkins, who has also played for the famed Rugby Union Barbarians, has thrown his support behind the MK Wolves – a newly-formed Rugby League club playing in his birth town, and Sam has leapt at the opportunity to become their Honorary President.

The England and Wigan full-back was born in Milton Keynes in 1989 before his parents moved the family north in the early 1990s and he was keen to get behind the fledgling club.

“I’m a huge supporter of grassroots rugby,” explained Sam. “And when I heard there was a Rugby League club starting up in Milton Keynes, given my links to the town, I was only too happy to lend them my support.

“Provided my commitments with Wigan allow me to, I’d love to get down to Emerson Valley to take in a match or a training session. But I’ll be following the results closely, and I wish the team every success in their inaugural season”.

MK Wolves take their name from the nearby area of Wolverton, in which the Milton Keynes Rugby Union side used to play, and it was encouragement from those Union players who wished to take up Rugby League that led to the formation of the MK Wolves Rugby League club.

MK Wolves are based at the state-of-the-art Emerson valley Sports Pavillion, and will be competing in the East of England Regional Division in Tier 4 of the English Rugby League pyramid, alongside Bedford Tigers, North Herts Crusaders and Bury St. Edmunds Titans.

MK Wolves’ chairman Andrew Quirke said, “Rugby League in this region has had a massive boost in the last couple of months with the addition of Northampton and Hemel Stags to the Championship One Division.

“Milton Keynes is a booming town and yet has never had its own Rugby League side. Thankfully, that’s now put right, and with Sam’s support, we’re looking to put Milton Keynes firmly on the Rugby League map!”
