Tom Davies commits long-term future to Wigan

Rising star Tom Davies has signed a new five-year deal with Wigan, keeping him at the Warriors until the end of the 2023 season.

The 21-year-old winger enjoyed a fantastic debut season in 2017, scoring 14 tries in 24 games.

But it is his work-rate that stands out more than anything. He made 309 metres in the game against Catalans Dragons last season, the second highest metres ever recorded for a player in a Super League game.

Davies was handed the number two jersey by coach Shaun Wane ahead of the 2018 season and his impressive displays this season has seen him named in Paul Anderson’s 25-man England Knights Performance squad.

On his new contract, Davies said: “To sign a new deal at a club like Wigan is a huge honour for me.

“I’m committed to this club and what we’re about and believe in everything that we’re doing here so to be a part of the future here long term is massive for me.

“I want to reach my goals in rugby as a team as well as an individual and I’ve no doubt that Wigan is the best club for me to do that with. I’ve got lots of respect for all of the team, Shaun Wane and the rest of the coaching staff so to be a part of this group now and in the future means a great deal to me.

“I just want say thank you to all the people that have helped me along the way to get me to where I am now because without them it would not have been possible.”

Wane said: “I am so pleased that Tom has extended his time with the club.

Tom is a fantastic example for any young player wanting to progress in any sport. Hard work, perseverance and a desire to improve are all attributes that he possesses in abundance.”

Kris Radlinski, Warriors executive director, added: “Tom is a dedicated professional who lives and breathes this club.

“He continually strives to improve and we have seen the rewards of that on the field over the last year or so.

“Having had several chats with players recently this was one of the easier discussions, put simply – Tom wants to stay and play for Wigan and we were just as keen to put a contract in place that would see him remain with us for the next five years.”

It has been an incredible rise for the promising winger, with him going from being an amateur at Wigan St Patricks to earning a five-year deal with the Warriors in just three years.
