Newcastle Rugby Ltd, the company that owns the city’s rugby league club, Newcastle Thunder, has re-purchased the freehold for Kingston Park from Northumbria University.

The rugby organisation now have the ground under their control for the first time since 2007, when it was sold to the Northern Rock bank.

Newcastle Rugby is also the group which owns the city’s rugby union club, with Kingston Park also being the 15-man code’s home in the city.

Newcastle Rugby chairman Semore Kurdi said the move was: “very significant,” and that it: “Secures the long-term future of both Newcastle Falcons and Newcastle Thunder at Kingston Park Stadium.

“It will also give us a permanent home from which we can continue the outstanding work of the Falcons Community Foundation as we look to grow both codes of rugby across the North East and Cumbria.”

Northumbria University will continue to play league and union matches at the ground they owned from 2008 until the present.
