Sam Thaiday has been revealed as the man to succeed Darren Lockyer as Brisbane captain.

Thaiday, 26, was named as the Broncos skipper for next season on the same day he announced a new three year deal with the club.

It means the Townsville-born prop will remain with the club until the end of 2015.

Thaiday said he was extremely honoured to be appointed captain.

“I am very proud and honoured to be staying on with the Broncos,” he said.

“Brisbane is my home now and I am very happy to have settled my future with this club so completely.

“To also be offered the captaincy of the Broncos is a massive thing.

“The calibre of the people that have come before me – including my current captain Darren Lockyer – have been absolute legends of the game.

Coach Anthony Griffin said Thaiday will benefit from a strong leadership group.

“Sam is going to lead our club into a new era,” said Griffin.

“He has great leadership skills both on and off the field, and over the last 12 months has really grown as a person and a player.

“We are in a very fortunate position here at the Broncos in that we will have a lot of senior players in our group with great leadership qualities.

“Guys like Corey Parker, Alex Glenn, Petero Civoniceva and Justin Hodges will support Sam next year and will give our club strong leadership.”
