Tanner to Boost Knights Back Row

The Newcastle Knights kick off a two week road trip this Friday night when they meet the Sharks at Toyota Park under lights.

The Knights are coming off a confidence boosting 24-18 win over the fast finishing Rabbitohs, and need to turn around a disappointing Round 16 loss against Cronulla at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

Announcing his 18 man squad today, Coach Michael Hagan named Back-Rower, Reegan Tanner, who returns to the First Grade ranks after aggravating a knee injury a fortnight ago against the Melbourne Storm.

"Reegan was carrying an injury for a few weeks so we decided to give him some time off to iron out any problems before the season advances any further." Hagan said.

"Before last week, he'd played all but one game this year so he'll benefit from a rest."

Centre, George Carmont also returns after a brief spell recovering from a heavy knock he suffered against the Storm. He replaces Brad Tighe, who moves back to Premier League.

Meanwhile, Matt Gidley (hamstring), Milton Thaiday (ankle) and Clint Newton (quad) underwent scans yesterday. Gidley has been cleared while Thaiday and Newton will be monitored during the week.

"I think we were all a bit worried when we saw Milton hobbling on the field after rolling his ankle," said Hagan.

"We'll keep a close eye on him and Clint as the week progresses."

"As far as Matt's concerned, he just suffered a bit of tightness but was sent for scans as a precaution."

Head to head, the Knights and the Sharks have met 30 times with Newcastle winning on 16 occasions and drawing once.
