Swinton swoop to sign I’Anson

Newly promoted Swinton have bolstered their squad for the 2012 Championship campaign by signing Chaz I’Anson from Widnes and re-signing hooker Mark Smith.

I’Anson, now 24, plays at stand off or loose forward and has played at Super League level with Hull KR whilst Smith was instrumental in helping the Lions lift the Championship 1 trophy this season.

Swinton Coach Steve McCormack said “Chaz fits the bill as far as being a top player on the the field and a tremendous professional off it.

“He had a good career at Hull KR and I tried to sign him when I was at Gateshead a couple of seasons ago.

“He can play six or 13 and is vastly experienced although still quite a young player. He’s still got a lot to prove and he’s coming here for the right reasons.”

Smith joins Ian Mort, Martin Ainscough and Karl Ashall in committing their future to the Lions.

McCormack went on to say “Smithy was very consistent in his performances. He rose to the challenge with Karl Ashall who put real pressure on him at hooker.

“In the modern game you need two good nines and that pair worked really well together.

“He had some big games for us last season and he’s looking forward to having another go in the Championship where he played for Widnes.”
