Swinton desperate in Workington showdown

Swinton coach John Duffy is predicting a tough battle against Workington Town on Monday.

The Lions won 40-38 at Sheffield Eagles last weekend.

Coach John Duffy said: “We changed from what we’d been doing and it seemed to have worked. It’s all down to the players really, who have really bought into it and got a result.

“Everyone down at that end is desperate, including ourselves, and Monday is another tough one.

“Although they’ve got injuries, as have we, I think they’ve got a good squad and Phil is a good coach.

“It will be all on. We’ve just got to try and keep this new attitude from last week and hopefully get a result.”

Rhodri Lloyd is due to return for Swinton.

Workington Town are looking to bounce back after losing the Cumbrian derby 28-24 at home to Whitehaven.

Coach Phil Veivers said: “We started the game pretty good then slipped off and gave ourselves too much of a mountain to climb.

“Some of the decisions were harsh. We had a try disallowed under the posts and that would have been six points and a win by two.

“Swinton are pretty urgent when they’re chasing the game and they came up with a pretty good play in the last couple of minutes to get the result against Sheffield.

“We’re a little bit restricted in our team selections. We’re pretty much buckled with injuries at the moment.

“I’ve only got one centre, one winger and no second rowers who are all out injured.

“But the boys haven’t given up, they’ve got the determination and the bit between the teeth.

“They’ll dig deep and have a shot and see how far they can go and see if they can stay in this division.”
