Super League injury room: Hull FC, Hull KR and Warrington among those to suffer fresh blows

Round 22 of the Super League season brought another entertaining weekend of action, along with a plethora of fresh injury concerns. A number of clubs suffered at least one new blow.

Across the competition, here’s a look at the players who either question marks now hang over or have already been ruled out after they picked up knocks during the Super League action we’ve just seen…

Bradford Bulls

Bradford were beaten convincingly at home by Warrington, and were without a number of senior figures – including Guy Armitage, who has played his last game for the club after being ruled out for the remainder of the season by a hamstring tear.

Bulls boss Kurt Haggerty did confirm they would welcome back Phoenix Steinwede for their Round 23 clash against Wigan, though, with a couple of unnamed others also potentially on their way back.

Catalans Dragons

As Catalans were thrashed by Huddersfield, they saw Hugo Cellier forced off on debut with a leg injury. The prognosis is still awaited on that one.

Hull FC

Hull FC’s victory at Saints came at the cost of Yusuf Aydin, who will not feature again this season after suffering a Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) injury. Zak Hardaker also left the action late on, with his issue unknown as yet.

This weekend could see the returns of both Sam Lisone and Ligi Sao from long-term injuries, though.

Hull KR

KR won comfortably at Castleford, but will now be without Sauaso ‘Jesse’ Sue for Thursday night’s clash against Catalans through a foot injury. Oliver Gildart may also miss the game against the Dragons having been forced off at the break at The Jungle  through an ankle problem.

Leigh Leopards

Leigh were without Jack Hughes through a tight quad as they beat York, but he is expected to return on Thursday night as the Leopards travel to Leeds. Fellow forward Robbie Mulhern was forced off late on against the Knights with a back spasm, so he will have to be assessed ahead of the trip to Headingley.

St Helens

As Saints were beaten by Hull, young half-back George Whitby – making his return from knee surgery – was forced off in the second half with an issue relating to his other knee. A prognosis is still awaited. Hooker Tom Humphreys also failed to return to the field for a second stint, but interim head coach Eamon O’Carroll confirmed that was not injury related.

Underlining Saints’ injury crisis, they had to cancel their scheduled reserves clash against Hull KR over the weekend due to a shortage of players.

Warrington Wolves

Wire’s big win at Bradford came at the cost of Joe Philbin, who limped off in the second half and now looks unlikely to recover in time for Thursday night’s game against York.

Luke Thomas and Josh Smith will both return though having been rested for the trip to Odsal, while head coach Sam Burgess revealed post-match that George Williams, Sam Stone, Cai Taylor-Wray and Arron Lindop could all be back in contention.

Notably, Taylor-Wray and Lindop both played for the Wolves’ reserves on Sunday, so any involvement for them on Thursday night against York would be on the back of a four-day turnaround.

Wigan Warriors

Wigan were without first-choice centres Jake Wardle and Adam Keighran as they beat Toulouse, but both are expected to return this weekend as the Warriors make the trip to Bradford.

Head coach Matt Peet confirmed Wardle was rested against Olympique as he ‘managed minor niggles’, while Australian Keighran has missed two games through a groin issue.

York Knights

York lost winger Scott Galeano to a groin injury at half-time in their defeat at Leigh. Ready made replacements David Nofoaluma and Ben Jones-Bishop are both back in contention for the trip to Warrington, though, alongside half-back Liam Harris.
