Stenchion boost for Oldham

Prop Luke Stenchion, out since he broke a thumb at Whitehaven in pre-season, may be back in action this week to give injury-hit Oldham a boost ahead of Sunday’s game against North Wales Crusaders at Whitebank (3pm).

It isn’t known yet whether he will have a run-out in Thursday’s reserve team game against Halifax at Whitebank (7.45pm) or be held back for Sunday’s Championship One game against the Wrexham-based Welshmen, who will be coming to Oldham for the first time.

That decision may be made this evening when several players will have injuries checked out, headed by full-back Miles Greenwood, who went over on an ankle in Friday’s Carnegie Challenge Cup defeat at St Helens.

The injury is not as serious as first feared, but whether he has a chance of playing at weekend will depend on how it responds to treatment over the next few days.

Also in for medical checks will be Paul Smith (hamstring), Paul Noone (ankle), Lucas Onyango (knee) and Graham Holroyd (ankle), who all missed Friday’s cup-tie along with the suspended John Clough.

Clough has now finished his two-match ban so he will be in contention to return to the 17-man squad.
