Start with Magic says Millward

Ian Millward has called for the Magic Weekend to be moved to the beginning of the season, like in 2011.

Castleford head coach Millward is a fan of the concept but does not believe that the current timing is correct.

He said: “It is entertaining but I’d love to see it played in the first round. The supporters get to see everyones new signings, what your team’s done in the off season, who’s got bigger and which young kids in the top teams have moved through.

“I’m not sure about the middle of the season, especially now the novelty of going to Edinburgh or Cardiff has gone.

“I think the Magic Weekend is a great way to launch a season.”

The Tigers face Wakefield in Manchester on Sunday and even after last weekend’s embarrassing 70-12 defeat to Hull KR Millward is confident:

“If we defend well I think we will win the game. We’ve got Rangi Chase back from a long suspension, I think that’s really important for us.”

Castleford v Wakefield is the opening fixture at the Etihad Stadium this weekend. Kick-off is at 1pm on Saturday.
