Newcastle Thunder have confirmed that Stanley Gene has departed from his role as head coach at the club, with immediate effect.

The former Papua New Guinea international’s contract has expired, and will not be renewed.

Gene led Thunder to the League 1 play-offs in 2014, and to an eighth-placed finish in Leaue 1 this season.

“Stanley has done a good job over the last two season, helping to progress the club up to where it is today,” Thunder chairman Bill Midgeley said.

“We have however agreed that we are at a point in time where both parties feel they can progress further by going their separate ways.

“I’d like to take the time to thank Stanley for all his work here at Thunder and wish him all the very best for the future.”

Thunder have confirmed that they will be advertising for a new coach very soon.
