Co-operative Championship division one Rochdale Hornets have appointed John Stankevitch as head coach.

Former St Helens player Stankevitch was head coach at Doncaster and assistant coach at Widnes Vikings.

Hornets chief executive Mike Banks was impressed with Stankevitch when the two were together at Widnes.

“We had lots of applications for the post of head coach which is very pleasing as it shows Rochdale Hornets is still held in high regard within rugby league, said Banks.

“I have worked with John at Widnes and have been impressed with his enthusiasm and knowledge of the game. John has bought into the vision for the future of Rochdale Hornets which we all share.

“He did exceptionally well in his time at Widnes as assistant first team coach and was appointed caretaker coach for five games in which he showed genuine promise as an up and coming young coach.

“The Hornets are now in a position to kick on, both on and off the field and there is a great buzz about the club.”
