St Helens injury crisis deepens

St Helens coach Royce Simmons confirms a further three players injured for Friday’s match against Catalan.

After their 46-6 victory over Wakefield on Sunday, coach Royce Simmons confirmed that Paul Clough, Jon Wilkin and Francis Meli have been added to the Saints’ injury list.

They join Leon Pryce, Michael Shenton, Josh Perry and Paul Wellens, who suffered an Achilles injury during the week.

Simmons said: “We’re monitoring him (Wellens) as he goes. He has an Achilles problem and we had a scan on him last week that said that there was no major damage.

“But it’s still a little bit swollen and inflamed. When he tried to run and push off he couldn’t. We will probably go and get a more detailed scan and have a look at that.

In addition to Wellens’ injury, Simmons confirmed that the hard ground had not been kind to his players’ ankles during the summer months.

Paul Clough has been out for 12 weeks and has come back and done his ankle. Wilkin has twisted his ankle, and Francis Meli has got a bit of an Achilles problem too.

“Grounds are pretty hard. We have to have a look at certain footwear and that sort of stuff. We had a lot of Achilles problems this week which is probably from the hard ground.”
