Kyle Eastmond was the hero for St Helens as his late try gave the Saints a 10-6 win over rivals Wigan Warriors.

The Warriors had led 6-4 since before the half-time interval and had soaked up a great deal of pressure from their opponents.

The win allowed St Helens to open up a four-poin lead at he top of the engage Super League table.

Matt Gidley opened the scoring for the Saints after ten minutes, touching down a Paul Wellens kick which had rebounded off Thomas Leuluai.

The poor conditions prevented any free-flowing play and Saints were unable to increase their lead, neither could the Warriors hit back.

Eventually, however, Wigan took the lead: Francis Meli spilled a Leuluai kick and Sam Tomkins touched down, Pat Richards’ opening up a 6-4 half-time lead.

Saints went close time and time again in an effort to claim the two points, and eventually it was looking as though the visitors might hold on.

Eventually, though, Eastmond found enough space in the Wigan defence to slide over before adding the conversion himself to claim a narrow victory.
