Spencer slams Oldham players

Oldham assistant coach Lee Spencer has ripped into the Roughyeds after their 82-0 defeat to Bradford, saying that the players “were beaten before they went out”.

Spencer said what the Oldham players produced yesterday was “totally unacceptable”.

“They were beaten before they went out – and as a coaching team we were disgusted by the players’ attitude out there,” he said.

“Whether they had one eye on what they consider to be winnable games I don’t know, but that’s not our philosophy.

“We go out to win every game – the players know that – and what they produced today was totally unacceptable.”

Oldham’s Sammy Gee looks to have suggered a season-ending broken ankle in the first half.

Spencer stressed that a defeat of this magnitude was down to nobody but the 17 Oldham players on the field.

“We played most of the last 20 minutes with only 11 men and that’s why the score was racked up,” he said.

“You can’t play this game with 11 men on the field against a team like Bradford.

“No excuses though. The way we played and the amount of effort we put in was unacceptable and it fell way below our usual standards.”
