South Wales players to get share of club profits

More than 20 members of the South Wales Scorpions squad have signed ground-breaking contracts that give them a share of the club’s profit.

In what is believed to be a first for professional rugby league, every Scorpions player and staff member next season will receive an equal share in the clubs end of year profits, gain cashback on tickets sales they make to the two big games of the season, and take a personal commission on any sponsorship they derive for the club.

This exciting development was brought about by Wales Rugby League who took over the ownership of the club earlier in the year.

WRL’s chief operating officer Chris Thair said: “We wish to grow a strong sustainable club for the community of South Wales and the sport of Rugby League to be proud of.

“Whilst work is being undertaken to improve all aspects of the club, these particular measures will be some of the key drivers in helping the club grow its income levels and supporter base – two key ingredients that will help the club move up the league table and enjoy some success on the field.

“The fact that it is unprecedented shows that we are thinking outside of the box and it will be exciting to see what develops from this.”

Wales Rugby League took over the club earlier in January, following the last minute collapse of a sale from the club’s founder Phil Davies to a third party, and have no interest in taking a profit from the club.

Scorpions captain Phil Carleton said: “This is a win win situation for all involved. I can’t see why anyone would disagree and why more clubs or teams from all aspects of sport don’t take a similar approach.

“The offer from WRL and South Wales Scorpions is not only generous but shows all involved we are trying to take steps to allow the players and staff to become a real part of the club and take some pride and ownership of what they are part of.”
