South Wales and Oldham wait after abandonment

The Championship One opener between South Wales Scorpions and Oldham was abandoned on Sunday, with several players down with hypothermia like symptoms.

Visiting Oldham were 18-4 up when the game was stopped eight minutes before the end, due to the wind, sweeping rain and the now wet, muddy and freezing cold pitch.

The RFL will decide this week whether the result will stand, and although Scorpions coach Mike Grady was disappointed his side were not given the chance to fight back to get a losing bonus point, he underestood the reasons for the abandonment.

Grady said: “I was a little disappointed. I thought we played well especially in those conditions. I hoped we’d get the bonus point as the effort and commitment was there so I don’t see why we couldn’t have pushed for another try.

“At half-time when we were 12-0 down, I just told the lads that they weren’t a million miles away as far as the skill level went. Our own individual errors put us under pressure in the first half and I told them that we needed to tighten those up and we responded straight away.

“A big credit to both sides though as those conditions were horrendous.”
