Smith praises rugby league legend for help in training camp
Warrington Wolves coach Tony Smith has praised the efforts of Andrew Johns for his help at their warm weather training camp.
Johns, who had a short stint at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in 2005, has been offering a hand to Tony Smith and his staff during Warrington’s stay in Tenerife as they prepare for Super League‘s season opener against Leeds at Headingley.
Smith says that the Australian, affectionately known as Joey, has been absolutely outstanding during his time in the camp and that his knowledge and expertise was vital to players of young and old.
“Joey has been brilliant with all the boys. They all get a bit out of him particularly our young halfbacks,” Smith told Warrington’s official website.
“We have some talented ones coming through and learning their trade but he’s also got some great tips for older guys too. He’s been terrific; just to have a legend like him in the midst of their training camp. We’ve had him before but it can’t be understated what he gets through.”
Smith also told of his happiness of the way in which Wire’s off-season has gone, and admits that the players are reaping the rewards for putting in the hard work ahead of the new season.
“They’ve been terrific so far. It’s been tough for them,” he said.
“The first couple of days were very warm and strenuous. They are going about their business in the right sort of way, getting a lot covered and that’s the purpose of being here to get a lot of rugby covered.”
Whilst putting the hard graft in on the field is of paramount importance, the Warrington head coach said that the activities off the training pitch is just as important to their success this season.
“There’s a good feel about the group and a good chemistry between them,” he said.
“They had an evening of go karting which they enjoyed and there was a lot of banter and rivalries afterwards as well. They are here to do work but at the same time it’s about building that chemistry and spending time together in between sessions.”
“They can talk and get to know each other a little better. This is probably our longest camp in Tenerife and so far the signs are good.”
