Six Huddersfield players have been arrested after a woman said she was raped at a Newcastle hotel.

The Giants squad were staying at the Gosforth Marriott Hotel as part of a pre-season tour, and Northumbria police said a 22-year-old woman had made the complaint following an incident in the early hours of Tuesday.

Huddersfield managing director Richard Thewlis said: “I can confirm that six of our playing squad are currently helping police with their enquiries in the Newcastle area regarding an allegation made in the early hours of Tuesday morning by an unnamed female. The club has fully co operated with all requests made of us by the police and we are now awaiting further information from them.”

Thewlis has travelled up to North East to conduct the club’s own enquiry into the circumstances.

A spokesman for the police said the men were being questioned on suspicion of rape.
