Kevin Sinfield has missed out on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award with Andy Murray taking home the accolade.

The former Leeds Rhinos and England skipper was the first rugby league player to be ever shortlisted for SPOTY.

The rugby league legend finished an impressive second in the voting with Jessica Ennis-Hill in third place. Sinfield received 278,353 votes while Murray got 361,444 and Ennis-Hill 79,898.

The Leeds Rhinos were also nominated for the Team of the year award after winning the treble, but that gong went to Great Britain’s Davis Cup-winning tennis team.

Rhinos boss Brian McDermott was up for the Coach of the year award, which went to Northern Ireland football manager Michael O’Neill.

Lizzie Jones, wife of Keighley half Danny Jones who sadly passed away earlier this year, sang ‘Danny Boy’ at the awards night.
