Ruan Sims has signed the first paid contract in women’s rugby league after agreeing to a one-year contract wth the Cronulla Sharks.

Sims has captained NSW and the Australian women’s side, the Jillaroos.

The 34-year old is the older sister of Warrington prop Ashton Sims and NRL forwards Tariq and Korbin Sims.

“It’s a hugely exciting moment,” Sims said.

“I feel very privileged. It’s so exciting to be in a position where we’ll be considered semi-professional and to be paid to play the game that we love.”

In 2017 Australia will lauch a women’s competition.
