Widnes head coach Simon Finnigan has played down pressure of the title chase following his side’s 36-10 victory over Dewsbury.

The Vikings remain unbeaten so far in 2022 and sit at the top of the Championship table with a better points difference than Featherstone. Rovers have also won their opening four fixtures in 2022.

Finnigan’s side opened their 2022 campaign with a 34-12 victory away at London Broncos. In round two, they put 70 points on Workington Town at home for an impressive 70-18 victory.

Last week, a drop-goal from the experienced Matty Smith saw the side claim a 9-8 triumph over Halifax at the Shay.

Speaking on Premier Sports following the Dewsbury clash, former player and current pundit Leon Pryce believes Widnes should be discussed in the mix for the title race in 2022.

Leon Pryce praises Widnes Vikings

“I think Widnes have gone a little bit under the radar so far,” Pryce said on Premier Sports speaking to Finnigan.

“We’ve talked about Leigh and we’ve talked about Featherstone but I think tonight now, you’re four from four

“I think you’re one of the teams up there right on top of the table and for people to start talking about.”

However, the Widnes coach played down any pressure and believes the teams discussed are still ahead in the chase.

“I’ll let you guys talk about it,” Finnigan responded to Pryce on Premier Sports.

“We’re not getting carried away. We train hard and know what we can do behind the scenes. There are other teams in front of us at the moment. We’ve had a good start.

“Maybe they’ll talk about us, but people talk about Widnes anyway. It’s a big club. We were under pressure last year when we were losing and under pressure when we win. Let them talk about us, but we’ve still got to perform week in, week out.”
