Sheffield Eagles have confirmed the signing of back-rower Evan Hodgson following his release from fellow Championship side Newcastle Thunder.

The Leeds-born 22-year-old came through the ranks at Bradford before moving to the north-east ahead of the 2021 season.

Hodgson made three appearances in total for Thunder, but the club’s switch to a hybrid training schedule has proved incompatible with his commitments outside of rugby.

He said: “I’m very happy to make the move. Things didn’t work out the way I wanted at Newcastle but there’s no hard feelings with the club.

“Sheffield are a great club with exciting plans on the horizon, so I am very excited to get going.

“I haven’t played for a few weeks so it will be great to get back out there and hopefully pick up the two points.”

Newcastle Thunder Director of Rugby Denis Betts added: “I’d like to thank Evan for his efforts with the club since joining and what he’s brought to the group.

“It’s unfortunate that our change in schedule means that he’s unable to continue with us, but he leaves with our full blessing and best wishes for the rest of the season at Sheffield and in all his future endeavours.”
